Crowdsourcing urban air temperatures from smartphone batterytemperatures

چکیده
[1] Accurate air temperature observations in urban areas are important for meteorology and energy demand planning. They are indispensable to study the urban heat island effect and the adverse effects of high temperatures on human health. However, the availability of temperature observations in cities is often limited. Here we show that relatively accurate air temperature information for the urban canopy layer can be obtained from an alternative, nowadays omnipresent source: smartphones. In this study, battery temperatures were collected by an Android application for smartphones. A straightforward heat transfer model is employed to estimate daily mean air temperatures from smartphone battery temperatures for eight major cities around the world. The results demonstrate the enormous potential of this crowdsourcing application for real-time temperature monitoring in densely populated areas. Citation: Overeem, A., J. C. R. Robinson, H. Citizen Sensors for SHM: Use of Accelerometer Data from Smartphones
Ubiquitous smartphones have created a significant opportunity to form a low-cost wireless Citizen Sensor network and produce big data for monitoring structural integrity and safety under operational and extreme loads. Such data are particularly useful for rapid assessment of structural damage in a large urban setting after a major event such as an earthquake. This study explores the utilization...

Currently more than half of the global population resides in cities1. Cities have been long considered as the paramount instrument for wealth creation and innovation. However, they have also transformed to the main source of crimes, diseases and pollution. Hence, as massive amounts of people move to urban areas, there is a need for cities to be run more efficiently. Nevertheless, at the same ti...
